Interview with Rob Knight: Transforming development & operations with SUSE’s Cloud Application Platform

In the run-up to ScaleUp 360° Continuous Delivery Europe – the digital event for DevOps experts, end users and practitioners, we had a chat with Rob Knight, CTO Enterprise Cloud Products at SUSE.

What are the main benefits of collaborating with SUSE? How can customers leverage their partnership with you?

SUSE is the world’s largest independent open source vendor. We have nearly 30 years of experience with Linux and Software Defined Infrastructure technologies. For SUSE, open means more than software. It’s a business model and a culture. Leveraging our Linux heritage, we deliver the truly open open source solutions, flexible business practices, lack of enforced vendor lock-in, and exceptional service and support that your digital transformation demands. Our commitment to open source means adapting it and making it dependable, with highly flexible solutions that are hardened and secured for the most demanding IT environments. We work together with our customers to ensure joint success at every engagement.

we.CONECT: I have read on your website about non-stop IT? Can you elaborate more on that and give some examples of the feature?

Nonstop IT means minimizing downtime and mitigating the associated risks by planning ahead and implementing the proper technologies and procedures to provide constant availability of your systems and data.

Constant availability can be your competitive advantage. This approach to providing nonstop IT requires realizing that while things will inevitably break, downtime doesn’t have to affect your users. We have a number of software solutions that help enable this, from our High Availability module for Linux through to an Enterprise Kubernetes stack (SUSE CaaS Platform).

You can read more about this in our whitepaper about Nonstop IT: https://www.suse.com/media/white-paper/make_nonstop_it_a_reality_for_your_business.pdf

we.CONECT: How do you precisely help customers to deliver application faster?

Our flagship Container & Application Platform, SUSE Cloud Application Platform, is a Platform as a Service built on top of Kubernetes. Developers should be enabled to focus on what they do best: Code. They shouldn’t have to worry about the infrastructure their apps run on or even think about operating system configuration parameters. By abstracting not only the infrastructure but abstracting Kubernetes itself, we enable developers to focus on code, rather than concern themselves with building containers. This allows them to test code changes at a more rapid pace, fix bugs faster, but ultimately deliver their apps faster & in a more streamlined way.

we.CONECT: How do you minimize risk when migrating to clouds?

All of SUSE’s solutions are capable of empowering our customers with the advantages of cloud technologies. All of our solutions are enabled to run on any cloud, be it public or private. We have strong partnerships with all the major cloud vendors as well as countless smaller ones, which we can utilize to our customers’ benefit. Our entire stack is thoroughly tested and validated in the cloud, and with our flagship Container and Application Platform, SUSE Cloud Application Platform, we can ensure code portability, and guarantee that if your app runs on your existing hardware today, then it will run on our platform in the public cloud as well, allowing our customers to significantly simplify & accelerate their migration to cloud.

we.CONECT: How do you support customers in case of downtimes and failures in the system?

We prefer to offer solutions that minimalize the need for downtime to begin with, such as Live Patching, that allows customers to receive vital security updates without ever rebooting the server or taking the system down. However, our world class support team has nearly 30 years of experience in supporting enterprise customers with incidents of all sizes. When something goes wrong, we’re available 24/7 to fix it.

we.CONECT: How do you think you can set apart from your competitors?

SUSE has always been at the forefront of innovation. We set ourselves apart by acting as leaders rather than following what our competitors are doing. For example, we were the first enterprise vendor to containerize and run Cloud Foundry natively on top of Kubernetes, something no one else in the industry was doing at the time. Now, all the major players have followed suit, and adopted our methodology and process to do so. Technology aside though, customers are at the center of everything we do. Our organizational structure allows us to go the extra mile every time for our customers and drive joint success. When you combine that with market leading technology, the result is extremely high customer satisfaction, with two-thirds of SUSE customers giving us a perfect score, well above the industry average.
